I was hoping that the Secular Buddhist Association would avoid this version of Engaged Buddhism, seen at other forums. I like the original version set in motion by Thich Nhat Hanh, doing things to help people. Complaining about what people on the other side of the world do is easy but unproductive. Also, political arguments are often divisive.

Something weird is going on here. None of the previous posts on this topic are appearing here. But if you go to Discussions/ethics/lesser. Of two evils you will find it

Yes, it looks as though there are two threads going, yet I don't see how. Very odd.

Agreed, Tom. In fact what drove me away from many Buddhist forums wasn't their religiosity, but the deafening NOISE of their constant arguments.

I do like being able to kick things about with like-minded people (I mean the people here), but I agree with you that often the Buddha's rules on Right Speech should be followed more closely.

With that self-reminder, I'll shut up...

Allen.

Jan- I was kind of confused about what exactly you were talking about in your first post but I do have an idea about your first point/question.
As for "bombing of innocent civilains"...I don't know anyone who supports that, not even Mitt or G.W. Bush(neither of whom I support). War is a messy business but I can personnly attest to the fact that our military does as much as we can to spare "innocent" or civilian life. I don't agree with our war in Iraq but not because its a war in general. I don't agree with it because it was unjustified. I recently wrote a paper on the Genocide in Rwanda and it gave me a different perspective on our foreign relations and our use of force. Rwanda really needed help in 1994 and the U.N.and U.S. did too little far too late. I think it is a classic example of not showing compassion. Wars and conflicts that result in death should be avoided if possible but the reality of our world is that it is sometimes necessary in order to help others avoid suffering. I know if I was in Rwanda and a Tutsi in 1994, i would have welcomed armed soldiers that would deter and yes if needed kill my aggressors.
I do think that we should have more options in a presidential race. I really dont like picking the guy who will do the least amount of harm. Obama is a decent person from what ive seen of his actions in the White House but I disagree with him enough to rather have someone else...not even close to enough to want Mitt Romney in office though. I liked that Ralph Nader guy but there are not enough supportors to make a feasble push for the office. I don't have many answers for how to fix out political system but I am all for hearing about ways it can happen. I would like to see secular Buddhists and the like take an active role in politics. If anyone knows of any groups that are doing so please let me know how to get in touch.
