Episode 327 :: Evan Thompson :: Why I Am Not a Buddhist

Evan Thompson

Evan Thompson joins us to speak about his new book, Why I Am Not a Buddhist.

If you ask ten people what Buddhism is, you may be faced with ten different answers. For some, it may be a religion, while others deny that and say it’s a philosophy. So not only are there many different kinds of Buddhism, there are many different ways to view it that are correct for each individual. Along with that may be a strong cognitive dissonance that’s can’t be ignored, so while there may be admiration for the teachings and practices incorporated into one’s daily life, being a Buddhist — whatever that means — may not be for everyone.

Evan Thompson is professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He is the author of Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy, among other books.

So, sit back, relax, and have an I’m Not That tea.
